Proud to have joined my legislative partners State Rep. James O’Day9;Day and RepresentaManny Cruz Cruz to co-host an excellent briefing on Raise the Age legislation yesterday. The panel discussion included insightful cross-sector perspectives from retired Supreme Judicial Court Justice Hon. Geraldine Hines, Det. Captain Lisa ButMore Than WordsWords youth participant Jayden Hernandez, CPCS Deputy Chief Counsel Duci Goncalves, and Dr. Naoka Carey, a professor at NYU School of Law. Here in Massachusetts, we have seen a 44% reduction in juvenile crime rates since we raised the age of criminal majority to include 17 year-olds back in 2013. The data is clear: keeping young people in the juvenile justice system provides them more access to the diversion, educational, and rehabilitative programming that lowers recidivism rates. Thank you to the advocates, coalition members, and all who continue to push for evidence-based solutions that support youths in the criminal justice system. See MoreSee Less

Celebrating their 20th Annual Youth Mentoring Day at the State House, I was proud to join with Mass Mentoring Partnership as they brought together young people, mentoring and youth-serving programs, and policy stakeholders as they advocate for critical investments in mentoring programs across the Commonwealth. The work that these organizations do to support the youth of Massachusetts is vital, and I am proud to advocate for them to have the resources to make such a positive impact. See MoreSee Less

Last week, I had the privilege of attending the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts (PFFM)'s A. Michael Mullane Annual Legislator's Night. The men and women in our fire service risk their lives every day to protect the residents of the Commonwealth. As a result of their heroic sacrifices, they face an increased risk of occupational cancer. I'm proud to be the lead sponsor of S690, which would mandate full-time firefighters undergo cancer screenings every three years and have those screenings covered in full by their employer-provided health plan. Making sure that firefighters have access to preventative screening measures that would help reduce their risk of cancer is critical to protecting their health and safety. Thank you to our firefighters for the work you do to keep our communities safe! See MoreSee Less

During today's office hours atSwampscott Senior Centerenter, I had the chance to hear about the services and programming they have for residents this spring. I spoke with some of the staff and high school volunteers with Opening Minds Through Art, a free community-based program that pairs students with older adults living with memory loss to connect through creating artwork. This program is made possible throuGreater Lynn Senior Services (GLSS.net).net) grant. Thank you to Director Heidi Sawyer Whear and everyone at the Senior Center who ensure our residents have access to supportive services and great events that keep them connected to our community.Want to hear about upcoming office hours this spring?
